The Royal Lahaina is one of a series of hotels and condominium complexes lining Kaanapali Beach on on Maui's western shore. It sits on 27 tropical acres along a half-mile stretch of that sand anchored by a 12-story hotel tower—fresh from $35 million in enhancements—but it retains the feel of Old Hawaii in its oceanfront and garden cottages reminiscent of the plantation era. Guests in either type of lodging have access to two oceanfront swimming pools, a beach activities center, two restaurants, a luau, and Kaanapali's two adjacent championship Kaanapali golf courses. From a tennis player's perspective, however, what makes the Royal Lahaina so appealing is Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch, a short stroll from the lobby.

It's a handsome complex, with a dedicated stadium court and 10 others, grouped around a pro shop that, like the hotel's cottages, takes its architectural cues from the plantation era. The complex is managed by Monnier Sports Enterprise Team, whose owner and manager John Monnier, has more than 30 years of teaching, coaching, and managing experience. The Ranch welcomes anyone, whether or not they're staying at the Royal Lahaina and schedules some sort of adult clinic or drill session every weekday and complements that with a Saturday morning combined drill and round robin for intermediates and above. They are also studious about their game matching, drawing on local members, snowbirds, and other hotel guests. There's also an after-school junior program for beginners 7-10 and 11 and up, as well as sessions for intermediate and tournament players ages 11 and up. These last, though intended for locals on an on-going basis are open to the kids of resort guests on a daily basis. The Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch also hosts two open tournaments each year in April and October, and in September the High-Powered Doubles Tennis Camp.
