No Caribbean tennis vacation is strictly about what happens on court even when, as is the case at the Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort, those are four handsomely laid out clay courts kept playable by an underground watering system called Hydro-Grid (unusual to find in the Caribbean) and managed by an experienced teaching pro. Context matters, too, and this resort benefits from being on a Dutch island whose colorful and architecturally appealing capital, Willemstad, is a United Nations Heritage Site and from its location, on a beach-lined peninsula bordered by the Caribbean on one side and an inland bay on the other. The resort is part of Santa Barbara Plantation, a 1,500-acre master-planned development that encompasses a 120-slip marina, the 18-hole Old Quarry Golf Course designed by Pete Dye, and the 350-room hotel and its Atabei Spa, StayFit fitness center, three swimming pools, watersports center, Camp Arawak (for 3 to 12 year olds), and three restaurants.
