"I have told my tennis friends that you have to go to the Desert Springs Marriott where tennis director Jim Leupold puts on terrific clinics, and events like the social tournament where you play on all three surfaces (hard, grass and HarTru) with different partners. Such a blast, and by the end of the day you have a large group of people to call on for matches during your stay. I always pack extra shoes and clothes because I spend hours on the courts for days. The surrounding view of the mountains is just spectacular. During the peak season Jim has a number of really good young pros that he brings in to help with clinics and events. "We went during the Indian Wells Tennis tournament in March. Loved that the hotel had a complementary shuttle service running to and from the tournament. Spent two days at the tournament, and spent another two days playing at tennis facilities at the resort. They had a nice selection of classes, and their tennis pros gave phenomenal private lessons. "Each year, we at Wilson Tennis need to choose a location to host our global marketing photoshoot, an event where we capture content with our top athletes. Choosing the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa is the easiest decision we make all year! From a facility perspective, they have everything you need. Hard courts, clay courts, and of course, the picturesque grass courts. They have catering, shipping, storage, and printing services that their team successfully manages throughout the week. Their restaurants and hotel rooms on site are first class - we actually don't leave the grounds all week because of all the great amenities on site. Most importantly, though, is the team that works in the Tennis Center, led by Tennis Director Jim Leupold. Jim and his team are so great to work with. Leading up and especially during our event, they always have a solution to anything we throw their way, and believe me, we throw A LOT their way. They are incredibly accommodating, professional, and best of all, friendly! Jim always makes a point to give a lesson to anyone on our team who asks, and even insists on doing it himself. Our week at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa is by far our favorite work trip of the year, and so of course we have no hesitation recommending their resort and tennis center for any event you may want to host there. "I attended the first World Tennis Camp (Cliff Drysdale and Peter Burwash companies). In order to attend this special camp, one had to be 4.0 and above. The staff was superb, clearly energetic, experienced in teaching, and very organized. We each filled out a survey of desired results and they clearly read them and organized accordingly. We also were able to play on hard/clay/grass. Some of the attendees over-rated themselves (I am a high 4.5 and some of the 4.5 rated players were under 4.0). "Nothing can compare with this resort. It is beautifully situated on an incredible pieces of property. It is unique. A true desert experience, amazing views, sports, relaxation and glamor if you need it. The Spa is excellent. There is enough to do at the resort that you don’t ever have to leave the property. And yet you never feel crowded, the place is spacious and well designed. You feel inspired just being there. The Tennis is absolutely my favorite. Jim Leupold is an exceptional Leader, Manager and Tennis Pro an, all round great individual. I recommend the offerings at the tennis center, incredible lessons, personalized attention and amazing courts in a great setting. My tennis has improved one hundred fold because of the quality of the teaching. My only point of weakness would be regarding the appearance of the court surface and the green chain link and canvas. It could do with sprucing up! It does not look as this has been refreshed in a long time. The current state of these things does nothing to promote the brilliant tennis program on offer at the Marriott. The tennis experience is US Open quality 100%. Jim Leupold gives his professional heart and expertise to maintain the offerings there, I have witnessed his friendliness, and helpful and informed attention as he reaches out to everyone who walks in the door. I'm a practical person so I loved the simple analagies (e.g. hitting a backhand is like throwing a frisbee) that allowed me to relax and not feel overwhelmed. "This is a wonderful tennis resort and destination!! The Marriott Hotel is great but we stayed in Villas I. This property is stunning wherever you stay. The amenities are abundant and the pools are gorgeous. We found the food very good but not notable at the hotels’ restaurants. Instead we ate out at some wonderful local restaurants. As for the tennis opportunities, you will be hard pressed to find better places. There are numerous well trained staff that are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They head up wonderful clinics year round, with lessons, matching services, and a biweekly “Grand Slam” where you rotate to play other attendees on all three court surfaces. There are maybe 20 (?} hard courts, 3 or 4 clay courts, and 2 grass courts. On Saturday mornings, the professional staff puts on a “Tennis Show” which is both hysterical and self deprecating. "We have vacationed at the Marriott Desert Springs Resort annually for almost 20 years: four generations of Kelleys have played on their courts. While we have visited other tennis resorts over the years, none compares with Desert Springs and the family atmosphere you feel from the moment you arrive. It is likely that Jim Leupold's longevity as Director has a lot to do with the consistently high quality of the tennis program over such a long period of time. You can play as much or as little as you want. A number of clinics on specific skills and/ or for beginners/ intermediate / advanced players are offered daily. (Over the years, our family's participation in those clinics has included players at all three levels ) Our granddaughters are just reaching the age when they will be participating in the junior clinics - we are looking forward to that. The "Grand Slam Round Robins" provide a fun way to play on clay, grass and hard courts and to meet other players. The pro shop staff does an exceptional of arranging games, bringing in players from the community if there are not enough hotel/ villa guests at the appropriate USTA level. (You asked for a weakness and if I have to come up with one, it is something hard to control at any tennis resort. A few guests inflate their reported USTA ratings in order to be player-matched in games with higher level players. As a result, once in a while, you end up in a disappointing game. But this rarely occurs twice - the staff gets to know the players quickly and adjusts accordingly.) You can be confident that a private lesson with any pro will be time well spent and will be customized to meet your particular needs. We always start and end our visit with one of our favorite program features: "Play with a Pro." Instead of a lesson, we sign up with Jim Leupold or one of the pros to be our fourth for a 60 or 90 minute family doubles game. The cost is very reasonable and you can't beat the experience for how much fun you'll have! The facility's setting, with the grass courts as its centerpiece, and surrounded by palm trees and mountains, is breathtaking. There are a multitude of fitness and other activities available at the resort, and easy access to beautiful pools and golf courses onsite. Guests can stay at the Marriott hotel or in the Vacation Club studios, 1 or 2 bedroom villas. Instructors Dave, Ben, and Jim were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Candy and Dora went above and beyond to find us a fabulous mixed doubles game and found a last-minute 4th when needed. The courts are in excellent condition with pitchers of water provided during classes. "This was my 3rd year in a row visiting the JW Marriott for spring break in February. Their pro Dave Kensler helped me arrange lessons before arrival so that I could play tennis a few hours after I checked into the adjacent Marriott Vacation Club Villas. This was my first time playing in their Round Robin, which was especially fun on the grass courts. Their clinics were never crowded and were always helpful, but I founded the highest yield for improving my tennis game with my private lessons with the pros, especially Dave and Jim. I also really enjoyed the tennis show they had on Saturday, which finished with a raffle and a lot of free tennis related prizes being awarded. Both my sister and I won in the raffle. Booyah! The only improvement I could suggest is that the tennis shop ladies be more organized with their player matching. A friend of mine was also staying at the resort, asked for her and her husband to be player matched for the next day, but was never called to be told they had a confirmed match for doubles. They only only found out about it last minute when they went to the courts to hit with each other. I also had asked to be player matched and gave the front desk specific days and times when I was available to play. The lady who took my information assumed I wanted to be on a backup call list for when other players wanted to play, rather than to have them actively call and find me an opponent. This resulted in me not being player matched until the 2nd to last day of my vacation, after I went to the front desk to ask why I had not heard from them yet. Fortunately, Jim Leupold overheard me talking to them and helped ensure that a player match happened. The resort itself is gorgeous. There's nothing like hitting a tennis ball and getting a glimpse of palm trees AND snow-capped mountains in the background. My friend and I took advantage of the fresh grapefruits hanging on the trees next to the tennis courts and entertained ourselves people-watching at the outdoor bar at the JW. Despite it being my 3rd trip to Palm Desert, I always find fun new places to visit, including the Bump-and-Hiking Trail nearby (great views) and the tennis courts of Indian Wells this trip."—S.S., Int., April 2016

"If you're looking for the spring tune up before tennis season begins, this tennis program--combined with tickets to the Indian Wells tournament--has everything. Morning instruction on a grass or hard court surface with Division I and college professionals who will give you rigorous hitting practice as well as the critical eye needed to fine tune your strokes, serving or game strategy. Afternoons and evenings spent watching the pros at the BNP Paribas Open practicing themselves and in match play. The tennis staff at JW Marriott is unmatched. They mix up the instruction and practice to continually round out the player's experience (in this case, a high school senior getting ready for the spring season). There organize the opportunity to play on grass, and to practice 'building a point' with a former DI player, and model different strategies for different game scenarios (down 0-40, up 30-0, serving, receiving, etc.) Jim, Isriz and Justin were fantastic. "The tennis courts very conveniently located, just 3 minutes walk from the resort. Astounded to see a multitude of tennis courts including one made of grass and several made of clay. The facility was clean and inviting and the staff helpful and courteous. My 14 year old son enrolled in a drill session which kept him running. He also took 2 one hour private lessons with 2 different knowledgeable and professional instructors, Isriz and Chad. Both instructors provided quality instruction and encouragement which he benefited from. "My wife and I stayed at the Resort during the BNP Paribus tournament and went to the am clinics and the round robins and still got see a lot of pro tennis at Indian Wells. The tennis facilities and hotel were both first rate. The tennis pros were all excellent. Every clinic was well run and very instructive. The pros were friendly and not condescending. The ladies in the pro shop were helpful and courteous. The location and weather in early spring was perfect. Where can you play tennis in 80 degree weather and see snow on the surrounding mountains. "I have stayed in the villas on several occasions now. It is the most accommodating place I have ever been to play tennis. Jim Leupold and his staff arrange excellent clinics and teach the latest trends in tennis strategy. This February I elected to take three lessons to improve my court coverage, and Isriz Balase, an excellent teacher and a member of the staff, worked with me on my approaches to the net in order to take full advantage of short balls and close out more points at the net, and thereby putting more stress on my opponent. I might add that, during a scheduled doubles match, Isriz Balase came out to inform us that we had bad news. One of the players couldn't make it.
