Set behind a beach at roughly mid island, this unpretentious resort stands out for its gentle prices and solid tennis programs. Tennis central is a wood-frame pro shop/fitness center next to a playground at the back of the property. Its narrow porch looks out on the first of 10 hard courts laid out in pairs in a staggered line between the woods and clusters of tennis villas.

Though not a resort with a lot of amenities beyond the beach and tennis, it does have what it says is the largest swimming pool on the island, this one set just behind the dunes and bordered by a broad deck. Otherwise, there are bike rentals, a summer children's program, a fitness center at the courts, and three places to dine. The condos occupy either four long four-story buildings perpendicular to the beach or any of several three-story buildings near the tennis center.

Tennis Staff. The personable Denny and Tanda Bianco run the tennis operation on eight hard tennis courts and four permanent pickleball courts. They have a long-established reputation on the island after running the former Port Royal Racquet Club from 1985 to 2018. Both played college tennis—Denny at Youngstown State University in Ohio, Tanda at Davidson College in North Carolina—and complement that playing background with extraordinary people skills. Immensely likeable, they seem to thrive on meeting the needs of every tennis and pickleball who stops by the shop. The joy they take in helping others is infectious. Court Complex. There are 6 hard tennis courts and 12 dedicated pickleball courts.

Travel Instructions. By Air: Port Royal is 45 miles from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) in Georgia and 95 miles from Charleston International Airport (CHS). Major airlines serve both of those gateways. It is also possible to fly directly to Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH), on commuter service from US Airways Express, via Charlotte, NC. Rental cars and shuttles are available at all three airports.
