Guillermo Vilas's distinguished career included four Grand Slam titles, a Masters title, and more than 80 ATP singles and doubles titles. His academy, on the island of Majorca, a few hundred yards from the Mediterranean, affords aspiring juniors three options: (1) full-time enrollment, dubbed their "High Performance + Studies" program, which combines tennis training with attendance at one of three local high schools; (2) a month or more of "High Performance" training; (3) or a camp program consisting of one or more weeks. All three use the same complex of 7 red-clay and 3 hard courts. Plans call for keeping year-round enrollment small—on the order of 20 students—in order to ensure plenty of personal attention. The emphasis is on "hard work, dedication, and a winning mentality."
Campers lodge in group rooms at the nearby Aparthotel Ponent Mar and dine on meal's prepared in consultation with a sports nutritionist. Those who attend on a weekly basis typically spend three hours each morning working on technique and drills, an hour on fitness, and two hours in coached tournament matches. See the website for more details, including information about the High Performance option. Vilas himself plans to live part of the year on Majorca, starting in March 2010. He'll work mainly with the High Performance juniors.
