For six of the last eight years, E.J. “Terry” Kahn III has joined a cast of 100 other racquet-wielding men for the competition, camaraderie, and shenanigans that take place the annual John Newcombe Legends Week in New Braunfels, Texas. Although many of the usual tennis legends will be on hand—John Newcombe himself, of course, as well as Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, Owen Davidson, and Ross Case—2018 introduces some new blood into the mix: Mark Philippoussis, Wayne Ferreira, Johan Kriek, and Mikael Pernfors. The unanswered question is what role this year’s legends may play in helping Kahn put his performance in 2017 behind him, a year in which he lost 12 sets in a row before finally managing a win in a tiebreak.
His 2017 record aside, Kahn may be facing a very different kind of dark cloud in 2018. Texas has been suffering devastating floods, and while the Ranch has been spared, rain and showers are forecast on each of the next several days. Undaunted, rain or shine Kahn intends to file dispatches daily about this year’s legends, players, competition, and shenanigans—supplemented, perhaps, by meteorological reports. As he got ready to leave, he looked back on his forecast for the first several days Terry will be filing reports almost daily at Newks Legends 2018
