Yonahlossee Racquet Club

Boone, North Carolina

Set deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, the Yonahlossee Racquet Club started out in 1922 as a summer camp for girls, but took on an entirely different dimension after being converted to a membership club in 1987, with indoor and outdoor tennis and pickleball, a pool, and fitness center, two clubhouses, and a bar, all bordering on hiking trails into the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

Veteran USPTA-certified tennis professional Bill Jones manages the club and directs the racquet-sports operations. Originally from New Hampshire, he attended college in Georgia before moving to North Carolina, originally to New Bern and then to the Yonahlossee Racquet Club in the mid 1980s. During a typical week he stages open play tennis sessions for men and clinics for women, supplemented by open play pickleball. Activity expands in high season, which runs from May to October, when he brings on extra staff handle the increased traffic and to host midweek kids' day camps.
Court Complex. There are nine clay courts outdoors—five for tennis and another four for pickleball. Those are supplemented by six indoor hard courts, three for tennis and three for pickleball.
