The Royal Lahaina Resort

Lahaina, Hawaii

The Royal Lahaina is one of a series of hotels and condominium complexes lining Kaanapali Beach on on Maui's western shore. It sits on 27 tropical acres along a half-mile stretch of that sand anchored by a 12-story hotel tower—fresh from $35 million in enhancements—but it retains the feel of Old Hawaii in its oceanfront and garden cottages reminiscent of the plantation era. Guests in either type of lodging have access to two oceanfront swimming pools, a beach activities center, two restaurants, a luau, and Kaanapali's two adjacent championship Kaanapali golf courses. From a tennis player's perspective, however, what makes the Royal Lahaina so appealing is Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch, a short stroll from the lobby.

It's a handsome complex, with a dedicated stadium court and 10 others, grouped around a pro shop that, like the hotel's cottages, takes its architectural cues from the plantation era. The complex is managed by Monnier Sports Enterprise Team, whose owner and manager John Monnier, has more than 30 years of teaching, coaching, and managing experience (you can find out more about him and his teaching staff at www.tennismaui.net). The Ranch welcomes anyone, whether or not they're staying at the Royal Lahaina and schedules some sort of adult clinic or drill session every weekday and complements that with a Saturday morning combined drill and round robin for intermediates and above. They are also studious about their game matching, drawing on local members, snowbirds, and other hotel guests. There's also an after-school junior program for beginners 7-10 and 11 and up, as well as sessions for intermediate and tournament players ages 11 and up. These last, though intended for locals on an on-going basis are open to the kids of resort guests on a daily basis. There are also a couple of open tournaments each year and the Ranch hosts the Tennis Championships of Maui, a USTA combined men's and women's Pro Circuit event typically held in late January.

Your Call

Here's what others have had to say about Royal Lahaina Resort.

  • 4½-Ball Rating "The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They set up the match for you and all you do is show up to play! They are very good at putting correct levels together for competitive play. They even call you the day before to confirm the match and provide towels and cups/water on court. Love playing here in Maui!!!"—T.M., Adv. Int., June 2017
  • 5-Ball Rating "My husband and I travel to Maui a few times each year. We stay at Maui Kaanapali Villas, which is located directly next door to the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch. Upon our return, we are recognized and greeted with the spirit of Aloha. We play several days each week, on gorgeous, well-maintained courts. The staff is so friendly and helpful, and does an amazing job of arranging both singles and doubles matches, according to our abilities, during our stay. There are 3 pros on site giving lessons and holding clinics, at extremely reasonable prices. Kudos to the head pro, Kaz Yamanoha, for keeping the integrity of the clinics high, without forgoing the fun aspects of playing with folks you've never met. The pro-shop has everything you might need, including re-stringing. I look forward to returning every trip. I've done my share of travelling, but nowhere comes close to this Resort."—B.R., Adv., June 2017

The courts are in perfect condition; the staff is friendly and helpful; and the pros give great instruction and clinics."—G.B., Adv. Int., May 2017

  • 4-Ball Rating "The Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch is located at the Royal Lahaina Resort at Kaanapali Beach, Maui, Hi. It is my favorite place to go for tennis on Maui. For about ten years , I have enjoyed meeting and playing with local players and tennis buffs from all over the world. The staff is very efficient arranging matches for players with the same abilities whether it's singles, doubles, or mixed. The cost is very reasonable and the facility is well-maintained. They also have pros on staff for lessons and clinics. If you're bringing your racket, this should be your first stop to sign up!"—T.W., Adv. Int., March 2017
