Here's what others have had to say about Kona Village Resort (Closed).
Rate Kona Village Resort (Closed)
CLOSED after incurring damage from the tsunami generated by the earthquake off northern Japan. No reopening date has yet been announced, though in a press release the resort says it expects to be closed for "an extended period of time."
In keeping with ancient Polynesian concepts, all guests at the Kona Village Resort bed down in private, thatched-roof bungalows similar to those you would expect to find in Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa—but with all the comforts of fine resort living. The resort's 125 contemporary "hale"
(houses) sprawl across 82 acres, in locations that range from oceanfront to lush lagoons or natural gardens.
Daily rates include not only three sumptuous meals per day, but complete use of the resort's recreational facilities, such as sunfish sailboats, glass-bottom boat excursions, snorkeling gear, tennis on three hard courts (daily clinics and round robins) and much more. However, the many regard the resort's greatest assets to be those things it does not have: no televisions, radios, in-room telephones, traffic, or noise to interfere with the total enjoyment of our peaceful village.

Tennis Staff. A native of Wisconsin, Andy Klug grew up playing junior tennis and later made the team at Willamette College in Oregon, a
school he chose partly because he'd be able to play doubles with his brother, who was two years ahead of him. After majoring in psychology and philosophy, he briefly taught at the former Club Med on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, a stint that convinced him he wanted to live in the tropics. After joining All American Sports, which had recently acquired the management contract for Kona Village, he was posted here, only to have AAS go bankrupt. In the aftermath, Kona Village hired him directly, a spot he's held continuously since 1977.
Tennis Programs. Guests wanting tennis while here will find free daily clinics and round robins and complimentary court time as well as the opportunity for private lessons. Still, with just three courts, the tennis qualifies as an amenity rather than a focal point. "We're a boutique resort with tennis," Klug concedes. "On any given week the tennis atmosphere can be great but it isn't always. It depends on who's here."
Courts & Fees. There are 3 outdoor hard courts each separately fenced at the edge of the property bordering the jagged mounds of black lava from an ancient eruption. Thatched roof palapas and white-flowered plumeria provide shade at the sides of each court. The complex adjoins the fitness center, at the end of a sandy path. Court fees: None.
