Set behind a beach at roughly mid island, this unpretentious resort stands out for its gentle prices and solid—though relatively unknown outside the local area—tennis programs.
Eric Wammock, former head pro and club manager at Sea Pines Resort, now runs this operation through his company Hilton Head Island Tennis. Tennis central is a tiny, wood-frame pro shop next to a playground at the back of the property. Its narrow porch looks out on the first of 10 hard courts laid out in pairs in a staggered line between the woods and clusters of tennis villas. For adults, Wammock offers some sort of stroke or drill program every weekday supplemented by weekend programs devoted to doubles. Juniors have even a larger choice, including Quickstart for novices and the very young all the way up to elite program for tournament players. And junior day camps get added to the roster in summer.
Though not a resort with a lot of amenities beyond the beach and tennis, it does have what it says is the largest swimming pool on the island, this one set just behind the dunes. Otherwise, there are bike rentals, a summer children's program, a small fitness center, and a restaurant/bar. The condos occupy either three long four-story building perpendicular to the beach or any of several three-story building near the tennis center. Wammock believes its big selling point is price. "The costs are pretty much unbeatable because the condo rates are much lower, though they're nice," he told me. Partly for that reason, he'll also be focusing on attracting groups and teams—except in summer, when this resort is all about families.
