This condominium resort is the most scenic place to play on Kauai, thanks to eight courts terraced into a tropical hillside above Hanalei Bay on the North Shore. Peter Burwash International's Donald Becker, who had previously been at Caneel Bay Resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands, is the tennis director here.
Pro Shop: 808-826-6522
Becker, who is originally from upstate New York, coached the Division I tennis team at Niagara University, owned and managed his own pro shop. He holds both USPTA and PTR certifications. He inherits a roster with one or more organized group activities almost every day, including Cardio tennis, stroke-of-the-day sessions, a class for beginners, junior clinics by age level (4-5, 6-9, and 10-14), and a couple of social round robins, most notably one on Sunday, dubbed the "Sunday Session", where players bring food and drink and have a party once the tennis ends.
Courts & Fees. Hanalei's court complex under went a major upgrade in 2015. Four of the courts were converted to Nova Pro Court XP synthetic grass. These have a sand infill which speeds the recovery after a rain (and the North Shore did not get to be so lush without experiencing rain). The other four courts were resurfaced in blue and green DecoTurf II, the same surface used at the U.S. Open. Fees: There is no charge for court use.
Beach. The resort sits up on a bluff, which furnishes it with fabulous views but requires beach enthusiasts to walk a winding pathway down to the public beach or catch the occasional hotel shuttle.
Golf Courses. Guests at Hanalei Bay have playing privileges at the Princeville Golf Course.
