Notwithstanding the name, Hamptons Surf and Tennis is much more about tennis than surfing (though the surf's there is you want to take advantage of it).
Its two- and three-day adult programs take place on the eight Har-Tru courts of the Montauk Racquet Club. The two-hour morning sessions are devoted to technique and drills, while the late afternoon (4 to 6 p.m.) sessions focus on match play.
The man behind all of this is Kirk Edwards, a former All American at the University of California at Santa Cruz who has spent the last 20+ summers teaching in the Hamptons. His approach, he says, is "to customize lessons to the way you learn," which can mean a hard workout for those who are serious or a free-wheeling fun session for those who aren't.
The base for all of this is Montauk Manor, an English Tudor-style hotel that dates to the 1920s and was originally built atop Signal Hill above Long Island Sound by Carl Fisher, an industrialist responsible for the development of Miami Beach. The hotel now comprises 140 condominium-style rooms with kitchens. Today it has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, day spa, those three tennis courts—newly resurfaced—a putting green and golf driving range, bocci and shuffleboard courts, and a restaurant.
